Simple Interior Design Tips Any Homeowner Can Use

Interior design is a concern for anyone that wants his or her home to have a certain feel to it. Whether you want your home to be cozy, comfortable or welcoming, there are ways to send that message!

A great interior-design tip is to start checking out design magazines. There are many magazines out there that will teach you all about how to design your home and garden, and they'll even provide you lots of tips. They'll also keep you up to date on all the latest style trends.

Make creative use of pillows and rugs. These are inexpensive and can change the attitude of a room very quickly. Play with different textures, colors, and prints to see what suits you best. The best thing about pillows and rugs is that you can move them to another room when you want a different look.

A great interior design tip is to learn the art of subtlety. Some people prefer gaudy styles and that's perfectly fine. But a lot of people just end up with tacky decorating because they're overzealous and just don't know when to stop themselves. All you have to remember is the saying "more is less".

When replacing kitchen countertops, it is not always necessary to go for what's commonly popular. If you want a traditional look, you can go with granite but for fun looks, you can use concrete, wood, and cork counter tops. These materials are often times less expensive, and it adds a bit of uniqueness to your kitchen.

Our Second Tiny House Makeover (Aka, Dollhouse Number Two)

"Since you guys have been asking how this large scale (but also, small scale – ha!) renovation has been going, I thought I’d share our second dollhouse progress. And if you missed our first tiny house makeover, you can check it out here.
Yes, this dollhouse totally reminds all of us of our own house, which has been especially fun. And our nine-year-old daughter has been acting as the general contractor, the interior designer, and the architect, which has also been a blast. From helping with painting and art to choosing colors, arranging the furniture and brainstorming future project ideas – she has been at the helm… WHICH HAS BEEN SO ENJOYABLE FOR MY HOUSE-LOVING HEART TO SEE (I’m also very happy to play the role of the dutiful assistant / budget realist – ha!).
This house will probably be in progress for the next few years as we add more furniture, and lights that really work, and maybe even a spiral staircase that leads up to the attic (squeeee!).

When using more than one color of paint in a single room, keep the combination of colors in the same family. In other words, a red can be paired with a pale orange or a blue with a nice violet. Colors that are closely located on the rainbow really complement each other, rather than clashing.

Always get a second opinion! Have you ever bought a rug or throw pillows that you thought looked amazing, only to decide later on they were a bit tacky? Showing photos of items you like to your friends or family members can help you avoid making purchases you regret. Everyone has their own tastes, but other perspective can help you notice things you might have missed.

When hiring a professional interior designer, make sure you see a portfolio first. This will let you know whether you, and the designer have the same tastes. A talented designer can do a lot of things, but if you do not like his or her style, you may have to seek out one better suited to you.

Paint or varnish old furniture before replacing it. That side table that you want to toss out? Try a silver varnish on it first and see if you like it better. Sometimes all you need to create a new look is a quick varnish or paint. Get creative, and even think about using a stencil. You may find you like the new look of that old furniture!

A key interior-design tip that everyone should implement would be to get rid of any clutter or obstructions in front of your windows. Your windows allow natural light into your room so anything in front of them is taking away this valuable light. Make sure that your room gets as much natural light as possible.

Keep your ceiling at least two shades brighter than the walls in your room. When this technique is not employed, the room feels smaller and more stifling, causing you to feel boxed in. Brighter ceilings make the room look bigger, and feels more expansive.

An interior design tip for outside the home is to remove the foliage and other plants that are obstructing your home from view. A home with overgrown plants and bushes has a rundown appearances. If you own an older home, many of the shrubs and trees will need to be trimmed up or removed to make the home more welcoming.

Even if you love your exterior landscaping, give your trees and bushes a trimming every now and then. Overgrown outdoor plants and trees can block light from entering your home, leading to dull looking interior design. Just with a minimal amount of trimming, you can really brighten up the rooms in your home.

A great way to get more natural light into your home is to use reflective flooring. Surfaces such as tile or well shined hardwood flooring do a great job of reflecting light in your room giving off more natural light. This is a great way to brighten up your room.

When designing a particular room you should think about who will be using the room after it has been decorating. For example, if you entertain often, you should determine whether or not guests would join you in that room. You want to be sure that you have adequate seating for however would enjoy the room at once.

A neutral cream is a great color for a hallway. This color is neutral and will complement colors in adjoining rooms. It is also a light color, and light colors bring brightness to the space and make it look larger. The hallway color will continue to work even if you change the colors of other rooms at a later time.

Don't crowd the nightstand! Nightstands often get piled high with reading material, glasses, jewelry, and more. To give yourself more space, get rid of the biggest nightstand space-hog: the lamp. Instead of a table lamp, go with a wall-mounted lamp or sconce. This will free up a lot of space on your nightstand, and a wall-mounted fixture with an adjustable arm will give you better light for reading.

You do not have to break the bank in order to make your home look nice. Adding some flowers, changing the curtains or repainting can make a world of difference. Interior design should be something anyone considers when updating their home.
